Accutane and Acne - Beach Beauty Bar and Acne Clinic

Accutane and Acne

When I hear someone recommend Accutane for acne, I cringe.

There are few things that can get a knee jerk reaction out of me these days, but the word Accutane does it without hesitation every time. Many of our clients have been treated with Accutane for their acne. Some have gone multiple rounds prior to coming to Beach Beauty Bar & Acne Clinic for respite.

Do you want clear skin?

The thing about Accutane is that it’s not a guaranteed clear skin treatment and the risks of being on it are great. So much so, they outweigh the pros. We have heard quite a few first-hand stories from our clients who have cried their way through Accutane with skin so dry that it bleeds.

Before we go off on a tangent about why you shouldn’t be taking this prescribed medication for your acne – let me give you all the facts – good bad and ugly so you can make that judgement call yourself.

What is Accutane?

When it comes to acne, there’s one medicine that’s usually pulled out as the big guns when all other treatments have failed.

Accutane – also known as isotretinoin – is a powerful oral retinoid designed to completely change the physiology of your sebaceous glands. It’s a manmade vitamin A derivative. This might not sound bad, but it is. When you start taking a supplement that stops or changes your body’s natural response to how it reacts to chemically altering drugs, incidentally that also means your body will shut down the part that protects.

If your doctor ever recommends Accutane without properly addressing your diet, vitamins, lifestyle, and skincare routine, you need to run – don’t walk – run out of that clinic and never look back. We’ll dive deeper into why, but just trust us here.

The side effects are seriously not worth it, and Accutane can wreak complete havoc on your body.

Why Do People Still Use Accutane for Acne?

The name alone may raise eyebrows… But there are people in the world who support the use of this stuff. Even after all the audacious side effects.

Among the many reasons not to use Accutane or Isotretinoin, one of the most alarming things about it is, it can cause serious congenital disabilities and has been associated with an increased risk of suicide and depression.

So, what gives? WHY are people still using this product if it comes with such great risks?

The answer is simple, yet alarmingly misconstrued. People want a quick fix to a long-term problem with an instant permanent solution. But what they’re not factoring in is all the damaging effects the medicine itself has on their bodies. Sure, it might clear your skin (while you’re taking it) but at what cost?

In other words, its mechanism of action is to literally hurt you. Causing immune system damage and possibly permanently damaging your sebaceous glands is the medicine’s so-called selling point.

And I haven’t even touched on the negative side effects of taking it yet.

Side Effects of Using Accutane for Acne

If you’re wondering if Accutane is really that dangerous, we’re here to tell you unequivocally that the answer is yes. From leading to permanent blindness to causing swelling in the brain – and even possibly leading to death – it’s one of the most tightly regulated and dangerous medications out there.

Now, here’s another bit of dark trivia for you. Accutane wasn’t originally designed to be an acne medication. Instead, it was created as a chemotherapy treatment for cancer patients.

The side effects of taking Accutane aren’t JUST tight, dry, bloody skin. As if that wasn’t enough to deter someone from taking it… There’s a mile long list & if you do a simple google search on any one of these side effects, you’ll see that there is merit here and you should steer clear of taking this stuff at all costs.

  • Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD)
  • Depression and Suicidal Ideation
  • Seizures
  • Liver Damage
  • Blindness
  • Small Vessel Vasculitis
  • Brain Damage
  • Blood Clot Disorders
  • Arthritis
  • Autoimmune Disorders
  • Sexual Dysfunction
