Instructions

1.           To each slice of bread, spread ghee or vegan butter on both sides. Place in the toaster oven. Toast for 5 minutes or until golden brown.

2.           You can also use your standard oven. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, then place the slices of bread on a baking dish. Bake for 5 minutes or until golden brown.

3.           While the bread is toasting, cut the avocado. Add the flesh to a bowl and mash it with a fork. Add the spices, if using, and mix well.

4.           Spread the mashed avocado on top of each slice of bread. Add your desired toppings and enjoy immediately.

How to make avocado toast

There are only two must-have components; toasted bread and sliced or mashed avocados.

From here, you can keep it simple with seasonings or get more creative with various toppings. A large, eight-ounce avocado is enough to make two generous servings. It yields about ½ cup of mashed fruit.

Avocado selection

Haas avocados are a top choice to pair with crusty slices of bread.

The texture is extremely soft and silky and mashes with ease. The taste is slightly sweet, nutty, and creamy. You can use other types of avocados to provide that delicate richness, although the taste may vary slightly.

Testing for ripeness

Just make sure to use ripe avocados. They should have a slight give when held in the palm of your hand and gently pressed with your fingertips. Also, if you remove the stem it should be green underneath.

Firmer avocados are ideal for slicing.

PRO TIP: If you want to quickly ripen an avocado, place it in a paper bag with a banana, close the top and check daily until it feels softer.

Bread choice

Choosing a great gluten-free option for bread can get tricky because many people either need or choose to avoid gluten. We have found that most of our acne-prone clients can have gluten, so this isn’t a must-have to stay acne-free, unless you have severely stubborn acne (then you may want to consider eliminating gluten).

Still, replicating the texture of typical bread is challenging. For this reason, gluten-free bread often has a bad reputation for being hard, dense, and crumbly.

Many products are also low in fiber and contain large amounts of artificial additives.

However, several gluten-free options on the market are both tasty and nutritious and offer a great alternative to traditional bread for those who avoid gluten. Check out this article to see what gluten-free bread is your top choice. The worst thing is to have the bread get soggy and crumble apart when trying to eat it.

The next step is to toast the bread to your preference.

Other tasty ingredients to add:

Tajin (only a sprinkle because too much salt is not good for acne)

dried or fresh herbs of your choice (I personally love adding basil)

chili powder

turmeric

dried ginger

sea salt

fennel seeds

Put leftover veggies to good use by adding them to avocado toast. Since you don’t need much for each slice, this option is perfect for those random bits and pieces. There are countless possibilities, but here are some tasty ideas:

radishes

microgreens

leafy greens like spinach, arugula, or kale

mushrooms

sliced tomatoes

canned artichokes

bell peppers

olives

Although avocado toast is often eaten as a savory dish, it also works well with fruits. Avocado, after all, has a neutral taste that compliments sweet flavors. Try pairing the following fruits with nuts, seeds, and a drizzle of maple syrup:

sliced bananas

berries

apple slices

dried fruit (like raisins)

sliced figs
