Liquid IV – Is It Worth the Hype?

Water supplements are all the rage these days! Countless companies have tried to reinvent water, adding more hydrating punch to every sip you take.

Liquid IV seems to stand out in the “saturated” world of water supplements. They’ve infused it with vitamins, electrolytes, or rock salt for “better body balance.” Buyer beware – we’ve found that most of these are plain old H2O in an overpriced bottle.

Your body depends on water to survive. Every cell, tissue, and organ in your body needs water to work properly. For example, your body uses water to maintain its temperature, remove waste, and lubricate your joints.

Everyone knows you need water for your organs to function–and the skin is your largest organ so you want at least eight glasses per day to help achieve that luminous glow!

Leveling Up Your H2o

Hydrating properly is more a matter of increasing the absorption rate than it is about chugging glass after glass of water. This is where supplements like Liquid I.V. come in.

We did an in-depth review of Liquid I.V. and a few alternative water supplement options to the mega popular hydration multiplier.

What about Liquid IV?

They’re all the rage on social media but before you sprinkle some into your water keep this in mind: some of the ingredients in these might make your skin break out.

Did you know liquid i.v. contains B12? Yep, it’s chock full of vitamins – which isn’t a bad thing, unless you have acne prone skin! Having an excess amount of vitamin B12 in your system is what triggers acne breakouts.

Alternatives to Liquid IV

Do not fret and don’t despair!

You can still get your hydration hack with these options that don’t contain B12.

Provided below are a few gluten free alternatives to Liquid I.V. made from simple, clean ingredients with no artificial sweeteners, colors, flavors or preservatives.

Nuun

A healthy alternative to a sports drink that provides electrolytes with much less sugar. One Nuun Cherry Limeade tablet, for example, only contains a single gram of sugar.

These tablets contain multivitamins, antioxidants, carbohydrates, magnesium or tart cherry, depending on the variety. Nuun’s tablets are plant-based and gluten-, dairy- and soy-free.

These are a great alternative to Liquid I.V.

Hydrant

Another great tasting product which provides benefits that keep you perked up and ready to go is Hydrant. Hydrant does all of this, without any B12 or unnecessary additives, so it really tastes like you’re drinking water with fresh lime, grapefruit, or blood orange.

Hydrant is the perfect balance of water, glucose, sodium, potassium, magnesium, and zinc—all the essential ingredients for hydration without the added B12.

DripDrop

These electrolyte sticks, on the other hand, were created by a doctor on a relief mission. Catering to more than just athletes, DripDrop markets its hydration multipliers to military soldiers, hospital workers, patients, and disaster relief workers such as firemen.

Their just-add-water hydration sticks are said to be good for illness, altitude sickness, and an overindulgence of alcohol — so pretty much everyone would benefit from keeping a few of these handy.

If you appreciate companies that give back, DripDrop donates its products for use in many humanitarian aid initiatives.

Natural and Homemade Options

You can also make your own electrolyte drink with mineral water—a pinch of sea salt, a drizzle of honey and a splash of lemon juice.

Coconut water and watermelon juice also are good options as they are both high in potassium.

You could even take a glass, fill it up halfway with water, splash in some orange juice for the potassium and sugar and add a pinch of sea salt.

Also, don’t forget that food contains electrolytes. When you’re drinking water and eating electrolyte-rich food, you’re re-hydrating. Many vegetables such as celery are high in chloride. Bananas, avocados, sweet potatoes, leafy greens and beans are all rich in potassium.

Stay hydrated

If you don’t drink enough water, you may become dehydrated. This means your body doesn’t have enough fluid to operate properly.

For most people, water is hydrating enough but if you’re looking for an added bonus to boost your water intake, these are healthy acne safe alternatives to the ever so popular Liquid I.V. option that contains B12.

Proper hydration is one of the essential tips to being your best self!
