Do you take supplements for your acne?
We all hear the importance of “taking our vitamins,” eating well, exercise, and so on. While all of that is undoubtedly true, taking supplements is more important than we probably know for clearing acne.
At Beach Beauty Bar, we have 3 main supplements that we swear by for our acne clients.
- Omega Via — high grade fish oil
We recommend two per day…amazing for jawline (hormonal) acne. Most other brands you would have to take 8 or so Omega Via. We want clients to take a combined dose of 1500 EPA and DHA per day.
- Opti Zinc (30 mg)
ZINC MONOMETHIONINE BENEFITS. Source Naturals OptiZinc is zinc monomethionine, a patented combination of zinc and the essential amino acid methionine. Research shows this formulation makes zinc more absorbable than other zinc compounds and therefore more readily available for the body’s needs
Zinc act’s like a natural antibiotic — skip the pharmaceutical antibiotics and choose zinc instead.
- Skin Defense (DIM)
Skin Clarifier by Osmosis for the most resistant skin…we save this for our toughest to beat cases.
Probiotic Supplements for Acne
Just as important as taking multivitamins (if not more), are taking probiotics and prebiotics.
Pro and prebiotics are essential for improving and clearing acne. Probiotics are living good bacteria and yeasts that are good for your health and digestive system. Prebiotics are indigestible fiber that fuel our good bacteria. Prebiotics and probiotics work together to reduce inflammation, lower stress, improve digestion and balance hormones.
Probiotics support skin health and acne through their impact on the gut microbiome. Research shows that people with acne tend to have key differences in their levels of gut bacteria compared to those without acne.
Modulation of the gut microbiome through diet, lifestyle, and probiotics indirectly influence the skin microbiome.
Boost Your Antioxidants to Clear Acne
Addressing acne through managing oxidative stress is a process that likely requires a combination of nutrients that work synergistically to support antioxidant function in the body. You can boost antioxidant status in the body through eating antioxidant-rich foods, supplementing appropriately with antioxidant supplements, and getting good sleep and regular exercise.
Boosting your antioxidants weighs heavily on the foods you’re choosing to eat. Here is a good list of non-inflammatory food sources that are great for acne prone skin types:
- Pinto Beans
- Black Beans
- Chickpeas
- Eggs
- Raw nuts (almonds, sunflower seeds, walnuts)
- Salmon
- Halibut
- Yogurt (not the sugary kind)
- Spinach
- Cauliflower
- Beets
- Avocados
- Asparagus
- Melon
- Everyone’s favorite: Brussels sprouts!
Diet and Supplements for Acne
A healthy diet plays a clear role in skin health and clearing acne.
Some foods (rich in omega 3s and probiotics) are found to be helpful while some foods we know will worsen skin health.
For example, it was found that achieving a low glycemic load in the diet, meaning keeping a healthy blood sugar balance, maintained healthy skin. To clear your acne – focus on reducing processed foods and refined carb foods, and choose more adequate sources of protein, healthy fats, fruits, vegetables, and complex carbs.
A diet comprising a variety of antioxidant-rich foods will speed up the process. As previously discussed, oxidative stress is one of several major factors that contribute to acne. Several vitamins and minerals act as antioxidants, including vitamins A, C, and E and the minerals selenium, zinc, and copper. Fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains also provide antioxidants.
While there are many do-it-yourself options to help manage acne, seeking the help of a professional skincare therapist is best in several situations, which may include:
- If you’ve tried everything to clear your acne but nothing seems to work
- Recurring breakouts
- Deep, painful acne or acne cysts and nodules
- Breakouts after starting a new medication or cream for acne
- Scarring or dark spots after acne clears
The Bottom Line
While there’s no magic solution for acne, there are things you can do to help the situation. A balanced diet, regular hydration, exercise, good sleep, and stress management can lay a firm foundation for skin health – along with applying sunscreen to protect from UV damage. Taking supplements can be part of a balanced approach to achieving healthy skin.
