Your Clear Skin Resolutions

Did Santa bring you the clear skin you asked for? No?! Well, we’ve got some New Year clear skin resolutions that will give you the thing you wished for most. Glowing clear skin!

Get this New Year off to a great start by doing some purging… & no not that kind of purging. The kind where you throw away all the junk food that gunk’s up your pores, that’s the kind of purging we’re talking about!

Do you want clear skin?

With the New Year here, you are probably starting to incorporate your new resolutions. And if you are like the rest of us, you likely are wondering HOW to actually accomplish those clear skin goals. If you have clear skin New Year’s resolutions, we have got you covered!

Personally, I’m not a fan of big, epic resolutions. I am, however, always enthusiastic about making little healthy changes throughout the year. The best part? Good-for-you changes can make a major impact on the appearance of your skin, and you can take your time making them happen.

Here are a few clear skin resolutions we can get behind…

Purge Your Kitchen Cupboards for Clear Skin

Let’s take stock of our cupboards, cabinets and skincare to discard the pore-clogging and pimple inducing products.  A fresh start on a new year is the perfect time to ditch any inflammatory foods in the fridge and cupboard.

What it comes down to is this: processed foods which are often high in saturated fats and simple carbohydrates, like sugar, are broken down by your body quickly resulting in spikes in your blood sugar levels. Thus creating breakouts!

So avoid foods that are inflammatory. Foods high in sugars or high in saturated fats such as white bread, candy, fried food, ice cream, fruit juice, pasta, ketchup, cream cheese, jam, pizza, sugar (white and brown), packaged snacks and sodas have to GO!

Restock your kitchen with healthy yummy alternatives to maintain your clear skin resolutions. To get some great inspiration, read this blog post to help get you started. Before you know it, you’ll be Marie Kondo-ing your whole house!

Dairy products and foods with high glycemic levels are the worst culprits for acne, such as:

  • Cookies and cake
  • Milk
  • Cheeses
  • Pies
  • Chips/fries
  • Fruit yogurts

Restock Your Favorite Skincare Products

It’s better to have a back-up in the medicine cabinet rather than running out. Toss out old products. This may also be a good way to get rid of toxic products and replace them with non-toxic alternatives. Start the New Year fresh by doing a clean sweep and clearing out all of your old cosmetics. Why? Most people are unaware that makeup has a shelf life and continue to wear makeup that’s way past its expiration date.

Restock on products that you’re low on for your clear skin resolutions! The beginning of the year is a good time to take inventory of what you have and what you need.

Wash Those Makeup Brushes

It can be a bit of a pain to clean makeup brushes as often as we’re supposed to but it’s necessary. Not cleaning your makeup brushes is one of the most common skincare mistakes you can make. Think about it, brushes and sponges that you use daily will have a build-up of product on them. Plus, dead skin cells, bacteria, and oil will also cling onto your beauty tools – yikes!

Try to set aside some time on Sunday evening to give those brushes a quick scrub. Wet the brushes with lukewarm water and use a facial cleanser or baby shampoo to break down the product. Rinse the bristles and leave to dry on a clean towel. Beauty blenders can be washed in the washing machine with the rest of your laundry. Simply pop them in a sock and tie it with a headband! Wash with a gentle acne-safe shampoo like Clean and Clear by Vani Cream.

Wash Your Favorite Baseball Hat

Whether you’re running to the gym or finishing errands at the grocery store, throwing on a baseball hat can save precious time and salvage bad hair days. If you have a favorite cap that gets more wear time than the others, it’s probably time to give it a good wash. Failing to wash hats worn on the regular can not only lead to dinginess and sweat smells but also skin and scalp issues, ew.

Toss it in the washing machine or if you’re concerned about it maintaining its shape use the dishwasher (just remove the dishes first).

Clean Up Your Laundry Routine

One of the first steps we recommend for clearing is to clean up laundry routines. If you LOVE fabric softener and dryer sheets, we have some safe alternatives for you with this acne safe fabric softener. Grab some white vinegar and wool balls, and let’s get you clear!

Heavy detergents and fabric softeners irritate your skin and cause itching, rashes, and, yes, breakouts. Opt to wash your clothes in detergent designed for sensitive skin that is fragrance-free.

Start with fresh pillow cases! By changing your pillow cases more often you are creating a cleaner environment for your skin. Changing these at the very least once a week is a good place to start. I change mine 3x a week.

Changing fabrics frequently, such as towels, pillowcases, and bedding is highly recommended as they are hubs of bacteria, moisture and dead skin which transfer to the skin’s surface on contact.

Plan Ahead for Acne-Safe Meals & Snacks

Think celery sticks and almond butter, almond or cashew yogurt with berries, fresh veggies, and hummus (check the label for no soy), Siete corn tortilla chips and salsa, or a vanilla pea protein shake with added semi-sweet cocoa powder for a chocolate protein shake that tastes like a milkshake.

For breakfast, start with eliminating processed items loaded with sugar and empty calories. Say goodbye to those sugary muffins and frosted pop tarts.
